In Finding the Forgotten:
our experience
Many of the families supported by our programs fall within the World Bank's definition of 'extreme poverty' in that they are surviving on less than US$1.25 a day.
In fact, some of the children we are trying to find sponsors for today come from families with no source of income. Others earn at best between 35 and 50 cents a day.
Many do not have enough food to last them through the winter. What food they do have lacks the nutrients required to be healthy.
Blindness, deafness, polio, mental illness and other disabilities are not uncommon.
According to local reports, it is estimated that 50% of children from these remote areas will probably die before they reach the age of 5.
We believe that through education and training ... sending children to school ... teaching mums and dads skills to support their families ... we can help break this cycle of generational poverty and improve the conditions in which these children are living.
