project ladakh, india

At present, our projects are focused on communities in Ladakh, in the State of Jammu and Kashmir in the north of India.

This region in the far North of India sits on the Western flank of the Great Himalayas, bordering Tibet to the East and surrounded by the mighty Karakoram, Ladakh and Zanskar Ranges.

Due to geography and climate, it is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir, and one of the most isolated.

There is something very magical about this Himalayan province. Sweeping plateaus of high desert moonscape contrast against a backdrop of jagged peaks and remote mountain beauty threaded with glaciers, deep-cut crevasses and snow melted rivers.

While it is a breathtakingly beautiful landscape, it is also a harsh one with unforgiving terrain. Villages are often snowed in for winters lasting between 6-8 months each year where temperatures can drop below -35 degrees C.

Today Ladakh is largely inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent. It is also home to many nomadic communities which move with their herds throughout the high altitude plains up to 8-10 times a year.

Known as ‘Little Tibet', Ladakh has been strongly influenced by Tibetan culture and is rich in history and tradition.
