rare permit granted to visit restricted area

In October 2009, after months of talks with Indian authorities, the Lille Fro Foundation was granted a rare permit to visit the region surrounding Nyoma and Hanle in the Changthang area.

This area on India’s disputed border with Tibet is a restricted access area which has been sealed off to foreigners for over 30 years.

While only a handful of organisations have been permitted to access the main towns over the years, we understand that our visit to many of the nomadic communities and villages tucked up through the valleys and over the passes marks the first visit from a foreigner.

It was at the request of many community leaders that we sought permission to visit this area.

Other than being known for its fierce climate, the Changthang region is also home to some of the poorest nomadic communities in Ladakh.

In addition, due to the remoteness, many children do not have access to basic schooling and despite their willingness to learn remain without any education.
